The longest underwater cave in the world with the unique relics found in Mexico

In the tunnels of the cave divers found traces of the first American civilizations, extinct fauna and Maya.

Mexico is known for its cenotes – underwater caves and lakes in the rocks of limestone. They attract travelers and adventurers from different parts of the world. And recently, divers found another cave, which was the longest in the world. Its length is 347 km. It is located near to the pre-Columbian Mayan city of Tulum in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

The cave is interesting not only a fantastic size and incredible natural architecture, but also archaeological finds which are noticed on the bottom of it. There are unique relics of the Maya, among which pottery and bones. Their study can shed light on the life and mysterious disappearance of the civilization. In addition, preserved specimens of ancient building, as in ancient times the cave was not filled with water.

«In the cave found traces of the first American civilizations, extinct fauna and Maya,» — says the researcher of the National Institute of anthropology and history of Mexico Guillermo de Anda.

Cave system Sac Aktun and Dos Ojos explore for about 14 years. But only now found the tunnel that connected them and hide interesting artifacts. According to researchers, the cave will be the «most important underwater archaeological site in the world and home of hundreds kept secrets».

The high hall of the underwater cave reaches a depth of 20 kilometers. However, most of the tunnels have a height of from 2 to 100 meters.

Previously, researchers believed that the length of the cave is only 270 kilometers. She competed for the championship with a cave system, Ox Bel Ha, located to the West of Tulum and is the length of the tunnels 270,2 kilometers.
